Structural Biology of Actin-Binding Proteins and .. |
|
It has been about 30 years since the structure of the first protein molecule "pancreatic trypsin inhibitor" was discovered using X-ray crystallography. Since then, many scientists have been dedicated to understanding the molecular basis of the structure and function of biological macromolecules " proteins and their complexes" by using combination of advanced tools such as spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy (EM). Scientists believe that the fundamental knowledge developed through basic research, including structural biology, can be brought to bear on the problems of specific human diseases and eventually lead to the cure of diseases and the rational design of drugs and new therapeutics.
Dr. Roberto Dominguez, a structural biologist and principal scientist (equivalent to the rank of associate professors at universities) at the Boston Biomedical Research Institute (BBRI), talked about specific aspects of his research: his motivation, a major research interest, and current research activities, which include topics related to the X-ray crystallography of protein phosphatases and proteins involved in cell motility, specifically focusing on actin-binding proteins.
